WORLD CUP 2010 predictions: A guide to the finals

We’re traveling to the Southern Hemisphere this month and this is not because we want to exchange our summer (not very hot yet) with the African winter (usually not very cold). Small differences, so what could be the reason? Safari? Football safari…

Four years means a too long wait for any hot football fan. But now the time is trying to become our friend as the World Cup’s fever is finally surrounding us and we can almost hear the Vuvuzela’s strange songs.

Not all of you can go to South Africa to support England in the strong fight to win the second title but your eyes and hearts will surely be drawn to the Southern Hemisphere thanks to the live coverage of BBC and ITV.

A

Teams:   France     Mexico      Uruguay      RSA

Prediction Group A
Crowned world champions in 1998 and runners-up in the previous World Cup but considerably weaker then it was in this last decade or more France is still the favourite here. So the old guy won’t die (so fast). Mexico and Uruguay will beat the Bafana Bafana team everywhere in the world but not in South Africa. This magic Vuvuzela …

B

   Argentina     Nigeria      Greece      S. Korea

Group B
Even with the help of their rookie manager Otto Rehhagel Greece will not do well this time and is unlikely to progress to the latter stages. On a good day Nigeria can beat any team, but the good days are quite rare so the South Koreans’ ambition keeps them over the Nigerians’ talent. But what about Argentina? They are still not sure whether their ‘Comandante’ is a madman or a genius. Messi is the genius from the pitch now and he holds the key. No problems for ‘La Albiceleste’ in this group.

C

   England     United States      Slovenia      Algeria

Prediction Group C
In Capello we trust! Or, Capello saves the team! Will he? If not now then when? If not he then who? However, the Yanks will be a serious opening test for England. A draw match will open the road to the knockout stage for both teams. The road is expected to be long but not paved with flowers. Oh, I almost forgot, there are two more teams here: Slovenia and Algeria.

D

   Ghana     Serbia      Australia      Germany

Group D
Ghana's star Michael Essien is injured also there were some disciplinary breaches in their team however their fresh style will still be a real danger for the European teams – the Black Stars are a real candidate for the second place. Nevertheless, Germany is selfish enough to not give a chance to Ghana and Serbia. No improvements for Australia since their first appearance at the finals in 2006 – sorry, no chances for the Socceroos.

E

   Japan     Denmark      Cameroon    Netherlands

Group E
The Samurai Blue team comes at the finals for the fourth time in succession. Unfortunately, here the football is for real – no electronics - so the prediction is black again. However, they still have the power to tame some guys called the Indomitable Lions. By winning every match in the qualifiers, The Netherlands announces a long itinerary in this African story of the World Cup. They still should prove that the team has not peaked too soon. For the second place, the well organized Denmark is expected to lecture on the subject ‘Football was born in Europe’.

F

   Italy     Paraguay      New Zealand      Slovakia

Prediction Group F
Most of the champions from 2006 are veterans now but still on the pitch. They are still green enough to win the group but be careful, a lot of water will be needed to reach the top again. In Africa water is a problem… The European contingent of Paraguay will put Slovakia on the third place. The All Whites reached the finals after only eight games against obscure football forces and will return to their homes with lot of stains.

G

Brazil     Korea DPR      Portugal      Ivory Coast

Prediction Group G
Dunga’s German roots should help him put his men’s talent into a rigorous shape in the challenge to win their sixth World Cup. Favourites to win in many predictions. Cristiano Ronaldo must do his best if the Portuguese are to progress in spite of the Ivory Coast managed now by the former England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson. Reaching quarter-finals in 1966, North Korea is already recorded in the statistics with their second appearance.

H

   Chile     Switzerland      Honduras      Spain

  Gr. H
The things are clear for the first place: Spain. Achieving the supreme glory will mostly depend on their capacity to regain their freshness after the heavy workload of the players. Despite having enough talent available, Honduras will go home after only three matches in which they will not disgrace. Chile and Switzerland: some people think that Chilean wine is better than a slice of Emmentaler while others think the reverse. A third category of knowers will say that they work best together. Football is cruel here and the combination is not allowed.
